Manuscript v1 — "How Many Bats?"

What this is. The page-by-page text draft. 14 story spreads, plus back matter. Written to be read aloud. Phase: Manuscript (artifact 00 of 4). Status: Draft v1 — 2026-05-11. Word count target: 450–650. Actual: ~560. Age band: 4–6 core.

Front matter

Dedication page (p. 4):

For [Child Name], who is learning to count — and for every brave counter who tries again.

(Default non-personalized edition: For every small reader who is learning to count.)

Spread 1 (pp. 5–6)

High in the castle, where the windows opened on the moon, the bats would not go to sleep.

The Count stood in the Great Hall and looked up the long stone stair.

"Oh dear," he said. "It is quite past their bedtime."

From far above came a small, busy sound — fwip, fwip, fwip — as if the belfry itself were stirring.

Chaco's ears turned toward the stair. Roxie watched, steady. Prince MoRee, perched high on a chair-back, blinked his amber eyes. Armando, in his fine black coat, was already thinking about which of them ought to go.

Spread 2 (pp. 7–8)

"I will go," said Moose.

His gold cape settled around his big shoulders. He stood very tall and very ready.

"My dear Moose," said the Count, with a small bow. "Most kind."

Armando, faintly amused, twitched the tip of his tail.

Spread 3 (pp. 9–10)

Up the spiral stair they climbed — Moose first, the Count behind with a single candle.

The candlelight moved along the stone walls. A small shadow swept past, the shape of a wing.

"They sound rather a lot," said Moose.

"Counting will help," said the Count. "Counting always helps."

Spread 4 (pp. 11–12)

They stepped into the belfry.

The windows were tall, and the moon was full, and the bats — oh, the bats were everywhere. Wheeling. Fluttering. Hanging from the beam. Peeking from the corners.

Moose's eyes went very wide.

"Goodness," he said.

"Indeed," said the Count, lifting his candle. "Goodness, and a great many bats."

Spread 5 (pp. 13–14)

"I'll count them!" said Moose. "I'll count them all!"

He pointed with his nose.

"One — two — three — four — five — six — seven — eight!"

He sat back, very pleased.

The Count's white moustache twitched.

"My dear Moose," he said gently, "there seem to be rather more than eight."

Moose looked again. One bat had just flown past his nose. (He had counted that one twice.) One bat was hanging quietly behind him. (He had not seen that one at all.)

"Oh," said Moose.

"Shall we try again," said the Count, "together, and slowly?"

"Yes please," said Moose.

Spread 6 (pp. 15–16)

The Count lit one small candle on the windowsill.

High on the beam, a single soft brown bat hung upside-down. Her name was Pip. One of her ears was a little tattered, in a way that made her look very wise.

"One," said the Count.

"One," said Moose.

Spread 7 (pp. 17–18)

A second bat flapped over and settled beside Pip.

The Count lit a second candle.

"Two," they said together.

Moose's tail thumped softly on the stone.

Spread 8 (pp. 19–20)

Two more bats wheeled into the upper-left corner and tucked themselves there, side by side.

Two more candles.

"Three. Four."

Moose tilted his head. "The corners," he said. "They like the corners."

Spread 9 (pp. 21–22)

In the upper-right corner, two more bats settled, side by side, just like the others.

Two more candles, warm and gold.

"Five. Six."

The Count smiled.

"They are very fond of corners indeed."

Spread 10 (pp. 23–24)

In the lower-left corner, two more bats.

In the lower-right corner, two more bats.

Ten small candles burned along the windowsill. Ten small bats hung in the belfry.

"Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten."

Moose looked all the way around the room.

"Count," he said. "Look. Two bats in every corner. And two more on the beam."

The Count's cloak swung open, just a little, as he turned. Inside the lining — embroidered in soft gold — were the numbers from 1 to 10.

"Why, Moose," he said, delighted, "you are quite right. Two, four, six, eight, ten! Counting by twos works too!"

Moose's chest swelled inside his gold cape.

He had counted to ten twice over.

Spread 11 (pp. 25–26)

High on the beam, Pip yawned a tiny bat-yawn.

The belfry grew very quiet.

"Shhh," whispered Moose.

Spread 12 (pp. 27–28)

One by one the bats folded their wings around themselves and closed their eyes.

In the corners. On the beam. Soft and small and ten.

The candles burned low.

Spread 13 (pp. 29–30)

From far below, beyond the windows, beyond the dark forests, came a long, soft sound — aoooooo — and then another.

The Count stood at the window and listened.

"Listen to them — the children of the night. What music they make."

Moose listened too. The wolves were a long way away. The belfry was warm. Pip was asleep on her beam, with her one tattered ear catching the moonlight.

Spread 14 (pp. 31–32)

Down the spiral stair they came — Moose first, the Count behind with the last small candle.

In the Great Hall, Chaco was dozing by the hearth. Roxie was curled on a velvet cushion. Prince MoRee was a small tabby crescent in a deep chair. Armando, paws crossed, was already dreaming.

"Most excellent counting, my dear Moose," said the Count.

"I counted to ten," said Moose, settling himself by the fire. "And then I counted to ten again, by twos."

The Count's cloak swept around him as he sat. The fire was low. The castle was quiet.

Far above, in the belfry, ten small bats slept.

Page-Flow Notes — "How Many Bats?" (Manuscript v1)

What this is. Per-spread notes on rhythm, page-turn engineering, and the relationship between text, art, and the read-aloud experience. Companion to the manuscript draft. Phase: Manuscript (artifact 01 of 4). Status: Draft v1 — 2026-05-11.

Overall page-flow shape

The book has the shape of an in-breath, a count-along, and a long warm out-breath.

Setup (1–3): Gentle in-breath. The story rises toward the belfry.
Arrival (4): Visual peak.
Miscount (5): Comedy. The book's only "oh no" moment, and it's a fond one.
Counting (6–10): Rhythmic build, one or two numbers per page-turn. Each turn lights one more candle, adds one or two bats.
Settling (11–12): Quiet. Slow out-breath.
The signature line (13): Held moment.
Close (14): Warmest yet. Resolution at home.

Spread 1 — Page-turn engineering

The page closes on the unanswered question who will go up there? Visually, all five pet-Counts are present; textually, none has volunteered. The page-turn pulls the reader toward Moose stepping forward.

Adult read-aloud cue: The line "From far above came a small, busy sound — fwip, fwip, fwip" invites the adult to make the fwip sound aloud. Encourages child participation early.

Spread 2 — Page-turn engineering

The Count's "Most kind" lands as a small punchline. Armando's twitch of the tail is a visual note for any adult who looks twice. The page closes on the about-to-climb energy.

Adult read-aloud cue: The Count's lines benefit from a slight, formal slowing. The italicized "Most kind" gets a gentle emphasis.

Spread 3 — Page-turn engineering

The shape-of-a-wing shadow on the wall is the visual page-turn hook. Textually, the reader is about to step into the belfry.

Whisper-cue: "They sound rather a lot" can drop in volume slightly — Moose has begun to wonder.

Spread 4 — Page-turn engineering

The visual peak of the book. The page-turn after the wide belfry establishing shot brings the reader to Moose's bold first count — which sets up the comedy.

Adult read-aloud cue: "Goodness," said Moose, can be drawn out slightly. "Indeed," said the Count, lands dry and warm. The contrast in their reactions is the joke.

Counting cue: The child may want to count the bats themselves at this point. The art is built to support that — all ten bats are in the spread. Don't rush. Let them count.

Spread 5 — Page-turn engineering

The miscount is the book's only moment of disequilibrium. It resolves within the same spread with the Count's gentle offer to try again. The page-turn brings the reader into the actual count.

Adult read-aloud cue: Moose's count ("One — two — three — four — five — six — seven — eight!") should be brisk and confident, in one continuous breath. The Count's reply ("My dear Moose…") should be slower, kinder, with the moustache-twitch implied.

Child-participation cue: This is the moment the child realizes the count was wrong. Pause after "Oh," said Moose. Let the child notice.

Spread 6 — "ONE" — Page-turn engineering

The first true count beat. The page is quiet. Lots of whitespace around the numeral.

Read-aloud cue: The numeral "One" sits on its own line. Read it slowly. Let it land.

Child-participation cue: Many children will say "One" along with the page. The next spread continues the rhythm; the child is now invited in.

Spread 7 — "TWO" — Page-turn engineering

Mirrors Spread 6's structure. The rhythm is now established.

Read-aloud cue: "Two" on its own line. Pause. The repetition (Count says it, Moose says it) is the read-aloud's invitation to the child to join.

Spread 8 — "THREE. FOUR." — Page-turn engineering

The first two-numbers-at-once spread. The pattern (corners getting filled) begins. Moose's line — "The corners. They like the corners." — plants the bonus-layer seed without lecturing.

Read-aloud cue: Two numerals on one line. Slight pause between them. The child can count along: "Three. Four."

Spread 9 — "FIVE. SIX." — Page-turn engineering

Mirrors Spread 8. The pattern strengthens.

Read-aloud cue: "The Count smiled." gets a small pause — the warmth of the discovery is dawning.

Spread 10 — "SEVEN. EIGHT. NINE. TEN." — Page-turn engineering

The book's discovery spread. The bonus layer surfaces here. Four numbers counted in one spread. Then the reveal: "Two, four, six, eight, ten."

Read-aloud cue: Read the four counted numbers as a steady, climbing line. Pause. Let Moose's discovery land. Then read the Count's "Two, four, six, eight, ten!" as a delighted rush. Moose's pride is the page's emotional payoff.

Visual cue: The cloak swing-open reveal of the embroidered numerals is the spread's visual delight. The adult reader may notice it and want to point — that's fine; the child will see it again on Spread 14.

Child-participation cue: Some children will spontaneously count by twos with the Count. Let them.

Spread 11 — "Pip yawns" — Page-turn engineering

The book's first whisper. Volume drops here. Text shrinks (visually, in the typesetting).

Read-aloud cue: Drop to a near-whisper for "Shhh." The child will whisper too.

Spread 12 — "The bats settle" — Page-turn engineering

The quietest spread. The art does most of the work. Three short text lines.

Read-aloud cue: Slow pace. The line "Soft and small and ten" is the book's quiet emotional anchor.

Spread 13 — "Children of the night" — Page-turn engineering

The held spread. The wolf-howl is a small "ooh" moment — but the Count's response (the famous PD-quoted line) reframes it immediately as music.

Read-aloud cue: The italicized line "Listen to them — the children of the night. What music they make." gets a slight register-shift in the adult voice — slower, more formal, slightly archaic. It is the book's most language-rich line.

Note: This quoted line must be verified character-for-character against Project Gutenberg #345 before final publication. (Carried-forward rights/source-intel flag.)

Adult read-aloud cue: Don't explain the wolves are far away — the text says it ("a long way away"). Just let it sit.

Spread 14 — Close — Page-turn engineering

The deepest warm. The Great Hall echoes Spread 1, but everything has settled. The closing image — "Far above, in the belfry, ten small bats slept" — refers back to the counted ten one last time.

Read-aloud cue: "Most excellent counting, my dear Moose" should land warm and formal. Moose's reply ("I counted to ten… and then I counted to ten again, by twos.") is the proud quiet boast — a child's own pride at having counted along.

Closing rhythm: The final three sentences shorten. "The fire was low. The castle was quiet. Far above, in the belfry, ten small bats slept." The shortening lulls. The page-turn is into back matter — into the real-pet photos — which is its own gentle delight.

Read-Aloud Notes — "How Many Bats?"

What this is. Detailed read-aloud guidance for the adult reader. Voice, pace, pauses, sound effects, child-participation cues. Companion to the manuscript draft. Phase: Manuscript (artifact 02 of 4). Status: Draft v1 — 2026-05-11.

Overall read-aloud register

The book is in the line's classical-storybook register: rhythmic, rich, slightly Victorian-formal in the Count's speech, warm and simple in Moose's, and a kindly-librarian narrator who finds the Count rather endearing.

Reading time: Approximately 5–6 minutes at a typical 4–6 read-aloud pace.

Voices

The narrator

Warmly amused, slightly formal.
Unhurried.
Pauses naturally at numeric beats.
Should NOT sound omniscient-lecturer. Should sound like a friend who likes the Count.

The Count

Formally courteous. Slightly archaic. Warm.
Slow. The Count is in no hurry.
A small, almost-musical lift in his courtesy phrases ("My dear Moose," "Most excellent").
The Count never raises his voice. He never sounds frightening. His "Goodness, and a great many bats" is dry and warm, not alarmed.
Important: Avoid any Lugosi-style accent ("I vant to bite your neck" etc.). That phrasing is NOT in Stoker and NOT in this line. The Count's voice is courtly Victorian English, not Hungarian-broken-English film parody.
A slight, kindly emphasis on certain words ("quite", "Most kind") works well.

Moose

Eager, warm, big-dog-energy.
A little breathless when he gets excited.
His count in Spread 5 ("One — two — three — four — five — six — seven — eight!") should be brisk and confident, all in one breath, ending with a pleased flourish.
His count in Spreads 6–10 should be slower, more careful, in step with the Count.
His final boast ("And then I counted to ten again, by twos") should be sleepy-proud — the child's own felt-sense of having just done something well.

The bats

The bats do not speak. The only "voice" they have is the fwip, fwip, fwip of wings in Spread 1, which the adult reader can voice.

Pip

Pip does not speak. She yawns visibly in Spread 11. If the adult reader wishes, a tiny yawn-sound here is welcome — but the text does not require it.

The wolves

Heard only as aooooo in Spread 13. The adult reader can voice this softly, distantly. It should not sound menacing.

Sound effects the adult can voice

Spread 1: fwip, fwip, fwip — soft wing-sound. Whispered.
Spread 13: aooooo — distant wolf-howl. Soft, long, gentle. NOT a horror-howl.
Spread 11: Optional tiny bat-yawn for Pip.

Numeric beats — how to pace the counting

The counting beats are the book's musical spine. Each numeral is a small held note.

The numerals on the page are visually large. The adult reader should treat them as held notes. Children will count along; let them.

Whisper-cues and quiet pages

Spread 11 ("Pip yawns"): Drop volume. The "Shhh" is a near-whisper. Many children will whisper "Shhh" along with you.
Spread 12 ("The bats settle"): Slow, quiet. The line "Soft and small and ten" is the book's emotional anchor.
Spread 13 ("Children of the night"): Held quiet. The italicized PD-quoted line gets a slight register-shift — slower, more formal, more inward.

Italicized lines

Three places in the manuscript use italics intentionally:

**"Most kind"** (Spread 2) — slight emphasis. The Count's warm courtesy.
**"Look"** (Spread 10) — Moose's discovery beat.
**"Listen to them — the children of the night. What music they make."** (Spread 13) — the PD-quoted Stoker line, set apart as the Count's signature utterance.

The italics in (1) and (2) are read with very slight emphasis. The italics in (3) signal a register-shift for the whole line.

Child-participation cues

The book is designed to invite participation without requiring it.

Spread 4: Many children will spontaneously try to count the bats. Pause. Let them.
Spread 5: The miscount is the child's chance to notice the error. After "Oh," said Moose, pause and ask (if your child enjoys it): "Did Moose count right?"
Spreads 6–10: The numerals on the page invite the child to say them with you. Most children will. The page-turn rhythm of one-or-two-numbers-at-a-time supports this.
Spread 11: "Shhh" is contagious. Children whisper.
Spread 13: The wolf-howl can be voiced by the child — distant and gentle. Or the adult voices it.

Things NOT to do in the read-aloud

Do not "scary-voice" the Count. He is warm. The book's joke is that the spooky place is cozy.
Do not make the bats sound frightening. They are sleepy babies in disguise as bats.
Do not rush the counting beats. The whole book rests on them.
Do not over-explain. Children will count when they're ready. The book gives them the space.
Do not skip the italicized Stoker line. It is the book's quiet language gift. Read it slowly, even if your child doesn't yet "get" it. They will, on the third or fourth read.

A note on rereads

This book is designed to deepen on rereads. The first read, the child counts. The second read, they spot the bats in the corners before the Count says so. The third read, they start whispering on Spread 11 before you do. The fourth read, the Count's "Listen to them" begins to land. Trust the slow build.

A note for the personalized edition

If the customer has personalized the book with their child's name:

The dedication ("For [Child Name]…") gets read warm and direct.
The Note from the Pets has the child's name inserted ("[Child Name], we noticed…"). Pause briefly on the name.
No other text changes.

If the customer has personalized the pet swap to a different animal (replacing Moose):

The pet's name replaces "Moose" throughout.
All Moose-specific prose was written species-neutral, so the read-aloud should still work cleanly with any pet name. (The art will show the swapped pet; the prose does not break.)
